Someone must have gotten lost when he made this trail and ended up at Echo Lake, thinking it was Billy Jones Lake and named the trail incorrectly. At some point you might hear Billy Jones Creek from the trail but otherwise you won't get the Billy Jones experience from the Billy Jones Trail. You'll have a couple crossings of Granite Creek higher up before reaching Echo Lake, not to be confused with the other Echo Lake or other "Granite" named sites in other not-so-far away locations in the Wallowas. Good luck having a conversation about this trail and location with someone else familiar with the mountains, but overall it is an underrated sweet spot high in the mountains.
This terminal trail takes off from Hurricane Creek about 5 miles up the Hurricane Trail and heads steeply up to Echo Lake. While there are some steep sections, there are several more mellow stretches and the run in toward the lake is very nice. The trail ends at the lake where you are tucked into a sweet spot high on the Hurricane Divide.
